New ‘Springbourne Gardens’ opens on Saturday

Tomorrow (Saturday 18 March) sees the opening of the brand new park and community garden in Springbourne, named ‘Springbourne Gardens’.

The official opening of Springbourne Gardens will take place at 10am on Saturday. The public will be able to see an artist at work installing the finishing touches to the park, and there will be storytelling and poetry reading, a children’s quiz, and the burying of a time capsule organised by a local community group.

Springbourne Gardens, created by Bournemouth Borough Council with design input from local children, will provide a much needed recreational space for friends and families to relax and socialise, and includes a junior play space with a ‘learning or story area’ and a community garden.

Councillor Rod Cooper, Cabinet Member for Economy, Leisure and Tourism, said: “There were virtually no play facilities in the area previously, so the new Springbourne Gardens makes a fantastic addition to the area.I think it is great that local children have had the opportunity to help design and choose their own play facilities - I am sure the park will be well-used by local families for many years to come."

  

The project has cost £146,000, funded by a combination of housing developer contributions, play and arts grant contributions and Local Improvement Funds pledged by local ward councillors.

Boscombe Sainsbury’s needs your support!

• Boscombe Sainsbury’s is hosting a silent auction on the night of Red Nose Day at AFC Bournemouth on 18^th March for some brilliant items such as Alton Towers Tickets and a table for four at Rubyz to see an audience with Dame Kitty, as well as money can’t buy prizes such as tea for two and a tour of the House of Commons with Tobias Ellwood, a signed Rastamouse book and even tickets to see Scouting for girls & Chris De Burgh along with a signed copy of his new album! So far our star prize is VIP tickets to the 20-20 cricket final at Edgbaston!
• We expect a huge turn out as we are selling entry tickets for a mere £3 (direct to comic relief) to an evening of drinks and the auction. Tickets are available from customer services in Boscombe store or by contacting the store on (01202) 394682.
• Store hopes to raise over £2000 from the event and every single part has been donated, from the venue, to the lots to the band!
• Photographers are invited to attend the evening and will be admitted free at the door by Vicky Bruce.
• The official Red Nose Day merchandise is on sale at Sainsbury’s and Fitness first, St James School and Seaward Day Nursery have all been selling them on behalf of the store and really getting into the fun and raising lots of money too!
• Sainsbury’s hope to raise over £9 million for this year’s Red Nose Day, which takes place on Friday 18^th March.
• The doors are open from 7pm and the auction tables close at 9pm when a band will take the stage.
• Popular Salisbury based 6 piece band The Intercepteurs have an infectious good humour and play third wave ska with a more traditional 1960’s influence and merge it with modern pop to create a main stream, high energy rhythm that is exciting and made for dancing!
• One of our colleagues, Laura Kitcher, features in Sainsbury’s current advert dressed as a giant fluffy red dice with Jamie Oliver. She is also featured in all of the ‘The more noses you buy the sillier we get’ videos, available at www.sainsburys.co.uk.

Organiser Vicky Bruce who works in Boscombe store said: “This event has gone from an idea over a cup of coffee to a huge fundraising do in less than four weeks; the response has been heartwarming and inspiring with so many people keen to donate their time and services for this brilliant cause”.

The store hopes to as much money as possible from the event. It’s one of several ways in which Sainsbury’s colleagues are raising funds for this year’s campaign. Last Saturday three colleagues (Vicky Bruce, Alice Weldon and Laura Kitcher) spend th entire day sat in the store foyer in a bath of beans, in their pyjamas! Customers enjoyed donating money to throw a tin of cold beans over them! It helped raise over £200.

To date, Sainsbury’s has helped to raise over £48 million for Comic Relief since the partnership began in 1999. This year, the retailer hopes to raise over £9 million for

Red Nose Day.

Locally, Sports forum for the disabled is supported by Comic Relief and operates out of the Littledown Centre. They are dedicated to promoting and developing sporting activities for the disabled and currently host a widely varied range, running the full twelve months of the year

Paintings inspired by ‘The Who’ to be exhibited this Saturday in Bournemouth

An incredible collection of paintings inspired by The Who’s music are to be displayed at Bournemouth’s O₂ Academy thisSaturday 19^th March. The artwork will be exhibited in the venue’s Gallery bar exclusively for ticketholders to view ahead of the Roger Daltrey show.

The paintings are the work of late artist and Southampton-born John Davis, who passed away in 2006. He began this project in 1969 with 20 pictures inspired by the album Tommy. Following an exhibition in Hampshire and various connections, the paintings were seen by both Roger Daltreyand Pete Townshend, and John was commissioned by the band members some years later to paint a further 25 pieces.

The work of John Davis will be on display thanks to close friend of the artist Paul Kelly.

“John formed a great friendship with the band following the commission and the paintings convey this relationship and the love he had for The Who’s music. This is a great opportunity for fans to see the collection and for me to keep John’s memory alive. ”

The legendary Who front man is playing a warm up gig prior to his sold out concert for Teenage Cancer Trust, The Who’s Tommy, at the Royal Albert Hall, London.
