Chance to exhibit work in Frog Bros comic shop!
A local comic book store is inviting anyone interested in art to come along and display their work.
The idea from Keirone Capstack and Miguel Da Costa, who run the ‘Frogbros’ comic shop in Boscombe’s Royal Arcade, came to fruition in July 2010 when they both worked on Boscombe market.
Keirone stressed that it is not a competition as such but he said: “It’s really a chance for people to get their work out there.” It means their work will be on display and will enter the community.”
Although it is predominately for art students anyone may take part and any work will be considered, although there will be some exceptions because of the shop being for families.
The contributions should be based on the Frog Bros’s own website story and there are already two works on display.
Kate, who lives in Boscombe and attends the Bournemouth Art’s university, came up with the idea of a girl confused about what was happening to her so she drew a young girl unaware of a looming monster shadow behind her.
Another local man Sam, from the same college, came up with the idea of a comic book detective story.
Apart from these two exhibits there are ten other art students from Boscombe who are now working on ideas for the shop’s walls. Keirone said; “It makes a nice environment, I think.”
As well as having their work on display for the community, artists blog addresses will be included and they will be filmed in the creative process for ‘Facebook’. This will give them a platform to hopefully be seen by professionals in the media industries gaining access to employment.
Following completion of the shops four walls in about a year there will also be an opening night. Artists, advertising executives, and magazine publishers will be invited to see the finished work giving another chance for recruitment. Keirone said: “When you are a student it is hard to get your work seen.”
Keirone explained that it will also give a chance to put Boscombe on the arts map and show that it is not just a London affair.
Customers have shown keen interest and some have said it is a brilliant idea. Around 25 people have said that they want to take part but it was thought that only about 8 of them will actually do so. Keirone said:”It takes a lot of balls to stand in a shop window and draw on some walls.”
He went on to explain that the main reason for people doing it is because they ‘love comic books.’
The invitation is not the shops only event of use to local artists. In the near future there will be a competition to design a t-shirt. The winner will not only have their work produced but they will get half the profits on sales. Artists are also invited to view the print process.
